Anti-racism values into action

At South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, we are committed to being an actively anti-racist organisation which challenges racist behaviours and works against racial prejudice.

Our Trust values – respectful, open, compassionate, collaborative, and consistent – are at the heart of everything we do and are the foundation of our anti-racism values, standards that put our core values into action against racism:

  • We are respectful of our differences and celebrate our diversity
  • We acknowledge that racism exists and openly call it out
  • We collaborate a nd are curious – we listen to people who aren’t often heard
  • We are compassionate and believe people’s experience of racism
  • We consistently role model anti-racist behaviours

These are the standards we ask everyone to adhere to, and to hold each other accountable to.

Our anti-racism values have been developed with staff across the organisation, alongside our Executive Advisory Group (EAG) and our Evolve (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) staff network. They will help to build our Trust culture and will be used as part of our recruitment, development, and annual appraisals.

“We want our Trust to be a place where everyone feels they belong, where we are all safe to bring our whole selves to work or care. And yet, despite the progress we have made together, racism and discrimination still exist in society, and in our organisation.

“We want our Trust to be fair for all. Which is why today we’re launching our new anti-racism values into actions. Just being ‘not-racist’ isn’t good enough – we need to be active in our anti-racism. We are saying that Racism Stops Here and asking that we all Be Part of The Solution.”

Joel Brown, Ijeoma Ndubuisi, Vanessa Ford (EAG Co-Chairs), Jacqueline Codrington and Ranti Lawumi (Evolve Co-Chairs) commenting on the launch of our anti-racism values in May 2024.

The values are supported by a number of activities and initiatives, including the launch of our anti-racism hub in 2023. This online platform offers resources and support for all staff, regardless of race, as we work towards becoming an anti-racist organisation.

We are also part of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Act Against Racism campaign and have signed up to UNISON’s Anti-Racism Charter and are working to implement the actions of both to tackle racism in the workplace.
