About the pharmacy team

Our pharmacy team plays a vital role in delivering safe, effective, and person-centred care across both community and inpatient mental health services. We provide specialist support for the safe and effective use of psychiatric medicines in both inpatient units and hospital-based community mental health settings.

Pharmacists work closely with multidisciplinary teams to optimise treatment plans, monitor outcomes, and ensure that medicines are used effectively and safely.

Pharmacy Technicians support medication management by liaising with healthcare professionals, counselling patients, and helping to ensure safe and efficient prescribing through audits and medicines reconciliation.

Our pharmacy staff offer expert advice on complex prescribing issues, help manage side effects, and support patients in taking their medicines as prescribed to improve outcomes and aid recovery. In addition to direct clinical support, the pharmacy team contributes to staff and patient/carer education, policy development, and quality improvement initiatives across the Trust.

Dispensary services

Our pharmacy dispensary, located at Springfield University Hospital, is responsible for the timely and accurate supply of medicines for inpatients, outpatients, and patients being discharged. The dispensary team works closely with clinical staff to ensure that medicines are provided promptly and correctly, supporting safe transitions of care and continuity of treatment.

Medicines Formulary

Our formulary is managed by the South West London Joint Formulary Committee (JFC)—a multidisciplinary team with representation from both primary and secondary care. The JFC operates a robust and transparent process for evaluating new medicines and reviewing therapeutic practices, clinical guidelines, and policies.

All medicines are assessed for their efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness, and patient acceptability. Only medicines that meet these standards are approved for use within the Trust and across South West London. Any medicines with governance or safety concerns are clearly flagged in the formulary to guide safe prescribing.

In some cases, medicines may be approved for use within our Trust but not accepted by the JFC. These medicines are not included in the South West London Medicines Formulary. In such instances, if the non-formulary medicine requests are assessed and deemed appropriate on an individual basis, the prescribing responsibility lies solely with Trust prescribers.
