Student research guidance
Student research means studies which are primarily for the purpose of obtaining an educational qualification. We support the set-up of student research, including undergraduate, masters and PhD. The UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care states, that universities and colleges are expected to accept the role of sponsor for all educational research conducted by their own students, unless the student is employed by a health or social care provider that prefers to do this. If someone works for our Trust and studies for a qualification, we might pay for or support their research.
The UK Policy framework also states that students should not normally take the role of chief investigator at any level of study, as this function should be undertaken by supervisors or course leaders. You should also seek a clinical supervisor in the Trust who will oversee you whilst undertaking your research at the Trust.
All student research requires ethical approval from the educational organisation. Some student research may also require NHS Research Ethics Committee (REC) and Health Research Authority (HRA) approval. Refer to the student research section on the HRA Website for the most up to date guidance on approvals.
We also require all students to complete student registration form. Please email your completed Academic Project Application Form [docx] 158KB with the mandatory documents ResearchDevelopment@swlstg.nhs.uk . Please read SWLSTG Student Projects Decision Tree [pdf] 68KB for more information.
