Springfield Village
For too long, large parts of the NHS mental health estate have been isolated from the communities they serve, reflecting outdated, stigma-laden attitudes to mental ill health from years gone by. Springfield Hospital in Wandsworth is changing and is now part of a new stigma-breaking community called Springfield Village.
The new Trinity and Shaftesbury buildings sit in Chapel Square, at the heart of Springfield Village. This square will soon be home to a number of shops and a gym following the opening of the Wellspring Cafe in 2023 - all surrounded by over 800 new homes.
Alongside this, the new 32-acre Springfield Park will continue to open between now and 2027 . 19 acres of this fantastic new space opened to the public in summer 2023 and include ponds, play areas and areas for informal sport. The remaining areas will feature a pavilion café, an amphitheatre, youth shelter, further play areas, sensory garden, trim trail and much more. By 2027 this will see Springfield transformed into a vibrant new community with mental health at its heart.
Springfield Village will eventually include:
- A 32-acre public park in Tooting – providing excellent outdoor space for our community
- Shops and cafés – amenities for everyone to use
- Hundreds of new homes, including affordable homes – providing housing for the borough of Wandsworth
- A new care home – supporting the wider community
- Land for a new school – investing in our children’s future
- And investment in local transport facilities – boosting transport links for residents.
