Investing in our future

Overall, the Trust’s programme represents a near £280m investment mental health services, creating first-class facilities. Works at Barnes follow the £150m transformation of Springfield Hospital in Tooting and the ongoing £110m redevelopment of Tolworth Hospital in Kingston – both hospitals provide a range of inpatient services to 1.2m people across South West London.

As well as providing high quality environments for generations of patients, this will lend a significant boost to the Trust’s ‘Anchor’ programme, as it works to deliver local investment and create a modern NHS providing care closer to home.

Maintaining our services

During the development there will be no disruption to local services. In 2023, all our teams previously based at Barnes relocated to temporary accommodation at Livingston House in Teddington where they will remain for the duration of the construction phase.

Once complete, all adult community mental health services will relocate to Barnes Hospital — children and young people's  outpatient services will operate from the new Richmond Royal Health Centre from summer 2025 as described below.

Working with our community

We will continue to work closely with our community and our neighbours throughout the build phase to support a smooth construction programme at Barnes.  Find out more about the latest on developments on site, including community forums, and sign up to our programme newsletter at  formerbarneshospital.co.uk

Health and education for the community at Barnes

As part of our Better Environments Programme, we are redeveloping Barnes Hospital in Richmond to become a new mixed-used community made up of healthcare, housing and education.

Barnes is a key part of our ambitious programme. In transforming our estate we want to deliver better care and break mental health stigma by bringing mental health services closer to the community.

At Barnes:

  • We are now investing £15m to develop a new outpatient facility at Barnes to replace derelict Victorian-era facilities, many of which have had been derelict and out of use for over a decade.
  • The new facility will eventually sit alongside a new 90-place Social and Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) school, developed by LocatED, an arms-length body of the Department for Education, and operated by the Beckmead Trust. Residential housing is also due to come forward on the final part of the site.
  • The Trust has been working with patients, carers, staff and its wider community on the development and design of the new facility for a number of years. Early works began in spring 2024, with construction due to start in July 2025 for delivery in late 2026.
  • During the development there has been no disruption to local services. In 2023, all outpatient teams previously based at Barnes relocated to temporary accommodation at Livingston House in Teddington where they will remain for the duration of the construction phase.
  • Once works are complete, it is anticipated that the Trust’s expanded Adult Community Mental Health Services will work across both Livingston House and Barnes Hospital, improving accessibility for patients in Richmond.
