Celebrating Black History Month 2024

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black people – both in society and the NHS. It’s a chance for all of us to reflect on the achievements that have shaped the world we live in today.

At SWLSTG, we’re incredibly proud that half of our workforce comes from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds. This diversity strengthens our ability to provide compassionate, inclusive care for everyone in our communities.

This year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, is all about shining a light on the stories of Black history that have too often been overlooked or misunderstood. It’s a call to challenge old narratives and celebrate the true impact of Black culture and heritage. You can learn more about the theme on the Black History Month website.

How we’re celebrating at SWLSTG

Throughout October, our Evolve (Black and ethnic minority) staff network has planned an exciting lineup of events. One of the highlights is our Big Read, where staff across the Trust are invited to read Oyinkan Braithwaite’s novel My Sister, the Serial Killer. This thought-provoking book explores the complicated yet close bond between two sisters, Korede and Ayoola, and opens up conversations about family dynamics and identity.

Later in the month, we’re thrilled to host The Gathering once again, a special event that celebrates peer support in mental health. In collaboration with Sound Minds and the Community Empowerment Network , the event will bring together members of our involvement network and staff for a day of inspiration, featuring powerful speakers, live performances, delicious food, and much more!

Racism Stops Here

Black History Month is also a time for us to stand together and say: racism stops here. At SWLSTG, we are committed to being an actively anti-racist organisation. We actively challenge racist behaviours and work to eliminate racial prejudice in all its forms.

Our Trust’s core values – respectful, open, compassionate, collaborative, and consistent – guide everything we do. These values are the foundation of our anti-racism values , standards that put our core values into action against racism:

  • We are respectful of our differences and celebrate our diversity
  • We acknowledge that racism exists and openly call it out
  • We collaborate a nd are curious – we listen to people who aren’t often heard
  • We are compassionate and believe people’s experience of racism
  • We consistently role model anti-racist behaviours

We encourage everyone to uphold these standards and hold each other accountable as we continue building a culture of respect and inclusion at SWLSTG.
