Progress on our new Tala Building at Tolworth Hospital
This summer marks a major milestone for Tolworth Hospital – over a year of progress on the new Tala Building, part of our £110m redevelopment of the site.

A new space for modern mental healthcare
Part of our wider Better Environments programme, the Tala Building will open in early 2028 as a state-of-the-art five-ward facility. It has been carefully designed to provide safe, therapeutic surroundings.
The redevelopment responds to the challenges of our ageing estate at Tolworth, with many old and unused buildings since demolished to make way for Tala.
More than a building – transforming our environment
The transformation at Tolworth goes beyond the Tala Building itself.
Across the wider site, improvements include:
- New landscaped outdoor spaces
- Improved access routes across the site
- A central plaza and café to encourage connection and community
These changes are helping to create a more open, welcoming environment – supporting our ambition to reduce stigma and build stronger relationships with the communities we serve.
Built with our communities
The plans for Tolworth have been shaped over several years of engagement and collaboration with staff, patients, carers and local communities.
From early consultation and planning approval in 2018, to revised proposals in 2022 and final approval in 2023, hundreds of conversations, workshops and engagement sessions have helped shape the design.
Construction formally began in March 2025 following completion of enabling works, and progress continues on track for completion in 2027. Our teams will move in from early 2028.
Investing in the future of care
The Tolworth redevelopment is part of a wider programme investing nearly £280m across south west London, following the successful £150m transformation at Springfield Hospital.
Together, these developments are helping to:
- Modernise our estate
- Improve environments for patients and staff
- Support recovery and wellbeing
- Contribute to over £1bn of wider investment in the local area
