Celebrating World Pharmacy Day: Supporting patients through innovation and compassionate care

On World Pharmacy Day, we are proud to celebrate the work of our pharmacy team by sharing two important initiatives that are helping patients, carers and staff across south west London feel more supported in their care.

Medicines Helpline

Our Medicines Helpline is here to give patients, carers and healthcare professionals the reassurance they need when it comes to prescribed medicines. Run by our specialist pharmacists, the confidential service offers friendly, expert advice on everything from taking medicines safely to managing side effects or supply issues, helping people feel supported and confident in their care.

MindMeds App

Another example of innovation is the MindMeds app, which was co-developed with people with lived experience, our pharmacy team, and technology partner Healthinnova. Free to download, the app helps users manage their medicines and monitor their mental health and wellbeing.

Key features include appointment reminders, a personal health diary, medication tracking, and side effect questionnaires. Users can record symptoms, sleep patterns, mood and test results, building a picture of their health over time. Importantly, the app can be used even by those not currently on medication, supporting people to prepare for discussions with healthcare professionals. With a secure sharing feature, users can also choose to share health information directly with their care team to support collaborative, person-centred care.

Talking about the app, Advanced Specialist Mental Health Pharmacist Henry Cheung described how it’s making care better for our communities: “The MindMeds app was created to make life a little easier for our service users and their carers. We know managing medication can feel overwhelming, especially with complex treatment plans, so having everything in one place really helps. It supports people to stay on track, feel more in control, and makes conversations with clinicians much simpler.

Delivering compassionate, community-based care

According to Deputy Chief Pharmacist Ricky Wong, both the Medicines Helpline and MindMeds app show our commitment to keeping care close to home, using digital tools to support better outcomes, and putting people at the heart of their treatment.

“These services are powerful examples of how we are helping people feel supported and confident in their care. They empower patients to take control of their medicines and mental health, promote self-monitoring, and support personalised, community-based care. It’s a privilege to work in a team that makes such a positive difference to patients’ journeys.”
