An update on estate changes in Richmond: Barnes Hospital, The Maddison Centre, Livingston House, Queen Mary’s, and Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre

  • In Richmond, our outpatient estate will continue to transition over the coming years and will be delivered from three key sites from late 2027: Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre, Livingston House and Barnes Hospital.
  • A new outpatient centre for children and young people has opened at Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre following a £2m refurbishment.
  • The £30m redevelopment of Barnes continues at pace, including a new outpatient facility and special educational needs school – both are due to open in 2027.
  • Livingston House in Teddington will be retained. The three services currently provided from the nearby Maddison Centre will move to Livingston in late 2027 and the Maddison Centre will then close.

At South West London and St George’s we continue to make significant progress in redeveloping and modernising our estate through our Better Communities and Better Environments Programmes.

In all this is delivering nearly £300m worth of investment to create first class environments for our patients, carers and staff. Our major inpatient centres have already undergone significant investment. Springfield Hospital’s £150m transformation was completed in 2023 and the £110m redevelopment of Tolworth Hospital in Kingston is well underway, with delivery scheduled for early 2028. Together this is providing first-class inpatient wards for generations of patients across South West London.

Better Environments for Richmond

In Richmond our programme is supporting the long-term reconfiguration and redevelopment of our sites. This follows a number of local consultations across different developments over a number of years, as well as a strategic review of our Richmond estate.

All together this aims to ensure we can make best use of our local footprint, avoid excess running costs, and allow room for growth, whilst prioritising accessibility and great care for patients and carers across the borough. This involves significant investment to improve our existing estate, and transitioning to operate from three key locations - Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre, Livingston House and Barnes Hospital - in the long term.

The Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre

In May this year, Richmond Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) completed their planned relocation from Livingston House in Teddington to the new Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre.

This new centre was created through a £2m refurbishment programme to transform retained space in parts of the former Richmond Royal Hospital. It now provides a modern outpatient centre supporting children and young people with a range of mental health needs across the borough.

Livingston House

Our Livingston House facility is also being retained as an outpatient centre. A range of community mental health services moved from Barnes Hospital to Livingston in 2023 to support Barnes’ redevelopment.

The following Adult Community Mental Health Services will continue to be provided from Livingston House ongoing:  Richmond Integrated Recovery HubRichmond Personality Disorder Intensive Treatment Team, Richmond Adult Eating Disorders, Richmond Older Adult’s Services (Memory Services, Care Home Liaison Service, Older People’s Intensive Community Support Team, Older People’s Recovery Support Team).

The following services will be based at Livingston House until late 2027 when they will relocate to the reopened Barnes Hospital:  Research and DevelopmentRichmond Home Treatment Team and Richmond Adult ADHD Services.

Barnes Hospital

Together with the Department for Education and LocatED, we are also progressing the £30m  redevelopment of Barnes Hospital in Richmond. This is seeing the creation of a brand-new outpatient centre for a range of adult community mental health services, alongside the delivery of a new Special Educational Needs school. The latter will be run by the Beckmead Trust. Both are due to be delivered in late 2027.

The following services will be moving to Barnes from Livingston House in late 2027: Research and Development, Richmond Home Treatment Team and Richmond Adult ADHD Services.

Richmond Older Adult’s Services, Richmond Integrated Recovery Hub and Richmond Adult Eating Disorders will work flexibly across Barnes and Livingston House to support access for patients in both parts of the borough. Clinic space at Barnes will also be available to teams in wider Adult Community Services in Richmond to work in this way.

And f
rom late 2027, Putney and Roehampton Integrated Recovery Hub (IRH)   will offer some services from Barnes Hospital, working flexibly from Springfield and Barnes  supporting local access for patients.

Queen Mary’s Roehampton

In the past year we have taken further steps in our ongoing process of vacating Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton (QMH) in order to better centralise and co-locate our services.

A number of our inpatient and community services have completed moves away from QMH over the past four years, with only two teams remaining there as of early 2025. In autumn 2025, Putney and Roehampton Integrated Recovery Hub (IRH) moved to be based at Springfield Hospital in Tooting and Richmond Home Treatment team moved to be based at Livingston House in Teddington in June 2026.
Clinic and consulting space has been retained for these services to use at QMH until late 2027 when Richmond Home Treatment Team will move to the reopened Barnes Hospital.

The Maddison Centre

In summer 2027, when services move from Livingston House to the new outpatient centre at Barnes, the following services at the Maddison Centre will then move to Livingston House and this will serve as their permanent base moving forward: Twickenham Integrated Recovery HubRichmond Single Point of Access, and Richmond Early Intervention Services.

The Maddison Centre will then close and will be sold to support funding for the wider Better Environments Programme. The Maddison Centre and Livingston House are less than half a mile apart meaning access will be maintained for patients, carers and staff in this part of the borough.

We recognise that, while these developments do not change the level of service provision across our community services, they represent a significant change in the make-up of our estate. We are committed to continue working closely with all our stakeholders to ensure these changes are progressed in a clear and accessible way, and we look forward to working with patients, carers, staff and partners to ensure this happens in the years to come.

Our Better Environments Team leading this work is also happy to meet to discuss these changes further with any interested parties – they can be reached at
