Support for friends, family and carers of people using forensic services

If someone close to you is receiving care from our forensic services, we can offer information, guidance and support to help you understand their care and look after your own wellbeing.

When a family member or friend comes into hospital it can be an anxious time. The Forensic Friends and Family Service have many ways to support you.

The Friends and Family support Group

The group provides a space where friends and family can support each other. Meetings are held every month, centred on a different topic chosen by you, often including an informative presentation and interactive discussions where you can ask professionals from the forensic service any questions you may have about general issues linked to your loved-one's care whilst in hospital.  You may attend in person or online through Microsoft Teams.

Family Intervention Team

If you need more individualised support than the support group can offer you, we can also arrange for you to meet up with two members of staff, one of which will be from the Family Intervention Team and the other will be from your loved-one’s care team. This can help to answer questions around things like medication and other forms of treatment and discharge plans.

Family Therapy

If there has been ongoing issues in your relationship with your loved-one, or within your family that affects your loved one, then family therapy may be able to help you address these.

Friends and Family Involvement Worker

We have a dedicated friends and family involvement worker named Marsha who has lived experience supporting a loved-one in forensic services. She can make referrals on your behalf or direct you to the correct team in the hospital or community to support you in your caring role, your wellbeing or with any questions or concerns you may have. If you would like support, have a question, or are not sure who to speak to, please contact Marsha on 07923438893 or email Marsha.Charles@swlstg.nhs.uk
