ULEZ: what you need to know and access to support

ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, except Christmas Day (25 December). The zone operates across all London boroughs, and does not include the M25.

If your vehicle doesn’t meet the ULEZ emissions standards and isn’t exempt, you need to pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive within the zone. This applies to Cars, motorcycles, vans and specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes).

You can find out more about ULEZ here.

Information for patients

This could affect some of you who may need to drive into or within the zone to reach their hospital (in a non-compliant vehicle).

Certain NHS patients are able to claim a reimbursement of the ULEZ charge when travelling to hospital appointments if they have been assessed by their doctor or nurse as too ill or vulnerable to use public transport. The patient reimbursement scheme is administered by participating NHS trusts. Patients are encouraged to check with their treating hospital if they may be eligible.

Your options

Scrappage scheme

London residents with a vehicle that does not meet ULEZ emissions standards can apply to the Mayor of London’s £160 million scrappage scheme. Successful applicants could receive a payment to scrap their vehicle or choose a lower payment plus one or two TfL Annual Bus & Tram passes worth more than the payment alone. Find out more about the scrappage scheme here.

ULEZ support offers

To help make the switch to cleaner forms of transport, there are also exclusive ULEZ support offers for successful scrappage scheme applicants, as well as offers for all London residents to take advantage of, whether they apply to the scrappage scheme or not.

Discounts and exemptions

To help disabled Londoners and community transport providers prepare for the expansion, the existing ULEZ grace periods (temporary exemptions) have been extended, and there are short-term grace periods for retrofits and compliant vehicles on order that won't be ready until after the ULEZ expansion.
