We are delighted to announce that the NHS’s Springfield Village has been shortlisted for an HSJ award in the category of Mental Health Innovation of the Year. The nomination recognises the transformational impact of Springfield Hospital’s redevelopment and the creation of our stigma-breaking new community.
Springfield Village is a central part of the Trust’s Better Communities Programme — bringing together significant investment in our estate and services to modernise mental healthcare, tackle health inequalities, and break mental health stigma.
By transforming our Victorian-era estate into this new village, our Trust has worked together with patients and partners to create a welcoming, inclusive community that brings mental health care into the heart of everyday life.
The development includes hundreds of new homes (including 500 classed as affordable), a new 32-acre public park, a public square, retail and leisure facilities, and spaces for community activities.
State-of-the-art inpatient facilities, Trinity and Shaftesbury, sit at the heart of Springfield Village. Designed in collaboration with patients, carers and staff to deliver first-class therapeutic environments, the buildings represent a £150m investment. They also feature one of the largest art programmes ever undertaken in the NHS, with 20 specially commissioned artworks co-produced with patients and staff and curated by leading mental health and arts charity, Hospital Rooms.
By combining high-quality facilities, with green space and community connection, Springfield Village underlines the Trust’s commitment to creating environments that break down barriers, support access and provide healing spaces that support recovery and wellbeing for patients and their families.
Director for the Trust’s Better Communities Programme, Ian Garlington said:
"Springfield Village has been genuinely transformative. Instead of being tucked away behind hospital walls, we're now right at the heart of a vibrant community.
“Staff can grab lunch at a local café, patients can take a walk through the park or pop into a shop. It's small things like these that help break down the stigma around mental health. Our patients and their carers are no longer cut off from everyday life. For patients and staff, having a supportive community around them makes a real difference to their wellbeing."“Being shortlisted for this national award is a recognition of the ambition, compassion, collaboration - and positive outcomes - that have defined this project, with over 400 consultations with staff, patients, carers and clinicians supporting our work over the years.”
