About our care

The service offers:

  • specialist assessment and diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • ADHD medication initiation and titration (the process used to find the right dosage)
  • occupational therapy (OT) for ADHD (group based for the majority)
  • and specialist medical review for those with an established diagnosis who are taking medication for ADHD.

ADHD referrals

All referrals received are screened and if appropriate a referral is made for a diagnostic assessment. Questionnaires and/or a request for a personal statement will be sent to the indiviudal to complete and once returned, they will be added to the waiting list for a face-to-face assessment.

If a diagnosis is made, treatment options will be discussed. These include medication and OT if required. Medication is prescribed and monitored by the ADHD clinic during the initiation and titration phase. When medication is stable, prescribing and monitoring is transferred to the patient's GP with annual specialist review in the ADHD clinic.

ASD referrals

Where referral is made for an ASD diagnostic assessment, a highly specialist psychologist will complete the assessment. This may take place over two appointments and include a follow-up appointment it needed. The outcome of the assessment is provided to the individual in a comprehensive report.

Due to high demand this service operates with a significant waiting list.

Patient information

ADHD WAITING LIST INFORMATION:

Following a clinical review of your referral you will receive a letter from the team advising you whether you have been accepted on to the waiting list for the ADHD service.

People who are currently being offered their first appointment with the service have waited over two years (last updated February 2024).

In recent years, across the UK, there has been an increase in demand for ADHD services. This is in part because people are becoming better at recognising the signs of ADHD and understandably want to seek an assessment. However, with more people accessing services, the waiting list for ADHD services has grown.

The waiting times for SWLSTG ADHD services are impacted by various factors such as how many people have been referred and how many patients require treatment. These factors continue to change and for this reason, we are unable to provide a precise time when people on the waiting list will be offered an appointment. We are aware how difficult such a long wait is for patients.

You will be contacted by the service when we are able to offer you an appointment.

If you would like confirmation that you are on the waiting list for the ADHD service, you can contact the team address provided and we will respond to this enquiry.
