Trust awarded funding in NHS Chargepoint Accelerator Scheme

We’re pleased to share that our Trust has received funding through the NHS Chargepoint Accelerator Scheme, a joint initiative by the Department for Transport and the Department of Health and Social Care.

Announced on 13 July, the scheme will see an £8 million investment from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles to help NHS organisations install on-site electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints and support the wider shift to a greener NHS fleet.

Thanks to this funding, we will be installing EV chargepoints at Springfield University Hospital, making it easier to transition to electric vehicles and helping to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

By switching to electric vehicles, we expect to see a reduction in fuel and maintenance costs, with savings that can be reinvested directly into frontline care. Across the NHS, this initiative is expected to save £130 million over the next 25 years, with an average return on investment in just four years.

NHS Chief Sustainability Officer Chris Gormley said:

The NHS has already implemented hundreds of projects that reduce emissions and drive significant cost savings, all while improving patient care. This new £8 million investment, across 62 NHS Trusts and around 224 sites, supports the renewed commitment in the government’s 10 Year Health Plan to deliver a more sustainable NHS while also helping hospitals to save millions on fuel and maintenance costs and reducing air pollution. These savings can be reinvested directly into frontline care, ensuring the NHS continues to deliver for our patients and communities.

Beyond the financial savings, this step contributes to the health and wellbeing of our communities. Reducing vehicle emissions helps improve local air quality and supports national efforts to tackle the climate emergency.

This is just one of the ways we’re working to make our Trust more sustainable, efficient, and future-focused.
