Trinity building highly commended at European Healthcare Design Award

The awards celebrate and recognise professional excellence in the design of healthcare environments internationally, and involve architects, healthcare leaders, academic researchers and healthcare providers from all over the globe.

The Trinity building opened to patients in December 2022 and is part of a £150m investment in local mental health services. It sits at the heart of the new ‘Springfield Village’ as the Trust’s headquarters are integrated with the wider community as part of a new stigma-breaking landscape.

Together with the Trust, architects C.F. Moller led the research and co-design process which included hundreds of workshops and consultations with patients, services users, carers and staff over a number of years.

Teva Hesse (Lead Designer from C.F. Møller Architects) said:

“We worked with Trust clinicians to find ways to allow greater individual empowerment to fill a day with meaningful pursuits, and make a service-user’s stay therapeutic, beneficial, and safe. The next generation of mental health facilities should aim to be comforting and uplifting: places of healing for patients, places of pride for staff, places of reassurance for relatives, friends and carers.”

The facilities include spacious ensuite bedrooms, world-class artworks and garden courtyards, providing places for rest and reflection. This ensures people have the best chance to recover in the best environment and supports staff to deliver outstanding care.

Construction began in January 2020 and continued throughout the pandemic. Trinity, opened on time and in budget in December 2022 and is now home to over 30 teams, including over 500 staff. It supports the delivery of care to patients in two acute wards, two specialist wards including national Deaf services, as well as adult community and children’s and young people’s outpatient facilities.

Ian Garlington (Integrated Programme Director) said:

“South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust are delighted that Trinity has been highly commended in the Mental Health category of the European Healthcare Design Awards 2023. Our building sits at the heart of the new Springfield Village. Springfield Hospital will become part of this new community as our estate is transformed alongside the development of over 800 new homes and the new 32-acre park which opens in stages between 2023 and 2025. The building is a significant milestone for our Trust and our communities. It represents years of hard work across our teams and with our partners to bring our vision of a new community with mental health at its heart to life.”

Since opening, Trinity has received national and international acclaim with its artworks featuring in the New York Times and its garden courtyards winning ‘Best External Environment Project’ in the 2022 Building Better Healthcare Awards.

The winners were announced at the closing ceremony of the European Healthcare Design Congress on 13 June 2023. Further information about the awards and the judging process can be found here.
