After an extraordinary career spanning over five decades in the NHS, Suresh will be retiring this March, marking the end of an incredible journey.
With 38 years of dedicated service at South West London and St George’s, he has been a passionate advocate for staff, a committed union activist, and a beloved colleague.
As he approaches this milestone, Suresh looks back on his journey and the memories he's made with the Trust.
Suresh’s journey through the NHS
Suresh began his NHS journey in 1972 after moving from Uganda. He joined the Trust in 1987 as a clerical officer and later progressed to become the recreation manager at Tolworth Hospital.
His dedication to staff welfare was evident throughout his career, with union activism being a constant thread in his work.
“I always wanted to work with patients. I would play snooker, have tea with them—it was important to build those relationships.”
Being part of change
"Looking back on my time at the Trust, I remember both the serious and the light-hearted moments. Being part of the implementation of Agenda for Change was a proud achievement, but I also cherish the memories of staff and patient pantomimes, some even made it into the Trust magazine!"
“For me, the most satisfying part has been fighting for the welfare of our staff and their rights. I’ve built good working relationships over the years.”
As recreation manager, he also played a key role in organising patient football matches. However, as a passionate cricket fan, he always hoped to establish a patient cricket team.
Valuable lessons learned
“The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that patient care should always be the priority, especially in terms of mental health.”
A deep-rooted passion led to four decades at our Trust
His deep-rooted passion for the NHS and its values kept him going all these years, “I believe very strongly in the National Health Service. People don’t realise how precious it is.”
After nearly four decades at SWLSTG, Suresh describes his feelings about reaching this milestone in three words:
“I feel very happy, lucky, touched – it’s a truly humbling experience to say the least”.
“I’ve enjoyed working every day of my life. I never felt unhappy to go to work, and I will miss truly the Trust”.
Suresh has left an unforgettable mark on our Trust and its people. Wishing him all the best as he embarks on this next chapter of his life!
