Springfield University Hospital wins a Design in Mental Health award

The Design in Mental Health community turned out in force in June for the 2023 Design in Mental Health Awards to see the Trinity Building at Springfield University Hospital, London win ‘Project of the Year – New Build UK'.

Attendees at the ceremony at the Coventry Building Society Arena enjoyed an evening of networking, valuable fundraising for the event charity, Maytree, and a celebration of the best the sector has to offer via the presentation of awards in nine categories.

The winners were chosen by an esteemed panel of experts with extensive professional and personal experience within the NHS and Private Mental Health sector.

Teva Hesse (Lead Designer from C.F. Møller Architects) said:

“We worked with Trust clinicians to find ways to allow greater individual empowerment to fill a day with meaningful pursuits, and make a service-user’s stay therapeutic, beneficial, and safe. The next generation of mental health facilities should aim to be comforting and uplifting: places of healing for patients, places of pride for staff, places of reassurance for relatives, friends and carers.”

The awards were presented as part of the Design in Mental Health Conference and were judged by a panel of experts with extensive experience within the NHS and Private Mental Health sector.

Excerpts from the award nomination show the care taken to change the paradigm of mental health facilities.

STEP Project Manager Harriet Gladwell-Phillips said: “It’s a pioneering project for the NHS providing much needed high-quality mental health facilities at the heart of a growing residential community. The Trinity Building creates one side of the new public square welcoming staff, service-users and visitors; its very location and aspect proudly announces the Trust’s presence, breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health”.
