Expanding our inpatient services at Springfield

Outside view of Trinity building

We are making some important changes to our inpatient services at Springfield Hospital this summer with Avalon Ward relocation and opening of Maple Ward. These changes will help us care for more patients locally, reduce waiting times, and improve the environment for people using our eating disorder services.

Why are we making these changes?

Demand for adult inpatient beds at Springfield is high, and we know that when patients have to travel out of the area for care, it can affect their experience and recovery. By making better use of existing space on site, we can provide more beds and better care, closer to home.

What is changing?

We currently have some underused clinical space in the Newton Building at Springfield. This gives us an opportunity to improve how our inpatient services are organised across the site.

With national funding secured, we will refurbish and reconfigure space in the Newton and Trinity buildings. This will allow us to:

  • Increase adult acute inpatient capacity
  • Improve facilities for our eating disorder services

Avalon Ward is moving

Avalon Ward, our adult inpatient eating disorder service, is relocating from the Trinity Building to a newly refurbished space in the Newton Building. The new ward will have 14 beds and will be situated alongside Wisteria Ward, our children's eating disorder service. Bringing these two services together will make it easier to provide joined-up, consistent care across our eating disorder teams.

A new ward is opening: Maple Ward

Once Avalon Ward has moved, the space it leaves behind in the Trinity Building will be transformed into a brand new ward called Maple Ward. This short-stay adult ward will offer rapid assessment and treatment, helping us get the right care to patients more quickly. In total, this will create 18 additional adult inpatient beds.

What does this mean for patients and families?

We know that transitions like this can sometimes feel unsettling, and we are committed to supporting everyone involved as we make these changes together. Throughout this process, our Capital Estates Team and Service Line Management leaders will continue working closely with all teams involved as well as our patients, carers and their families. Our shared goal is to provide high-quality, sustainable services that are closer to home, more joined-up, and better able to meet the needs of our communities.

When will this happen?

Both changes are planned for this summer. We will share more dates as soon as they are confirmed.
