As part of our Trust’s Better Communities and Better Environments Programmes, we are working to transform our estate and create first class environments for our patients, carers and staff in South West London.
This £280m programme of investment is supporting the redevelopment of our sites across Wandsworth, Kingston and Richmond and the creation of a number of state-of-the-art facilities in line with local consultations.
Better Environments for South West London
Following Springfield Hospital’s £150m transformation, completed in 2023, we are delighted to have ‘broken ground’ in the past six months, both on the £110m redevelopment of Tolworth Hospital in Kingston and the £30m redevelopment of Barnes Hospital in Richmond.
The latter will provide a modern outpatient facility for a range of community services across Richmond, as well as a new Special Educational Needs school to be run by the Beckmead Trust. Both are due to be delivered in 2027.
This summer we also complete the £2m refurbishment of our site at the former Richmond Royal Hospital. An outpatient facility will reopen here in August 2025 as a new ‘Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre’, and will provide Richmond’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
Making best use of our facilities in Richmond
In the coming months and years, we will be progressing a number of changes across our estate in Richmond, which currently includes:
Over the past year we have been working together with our clinicians, patients and carers to plan the reconfiguration of our estate in order to ensure continued accessibility for patients across the borough, make best use of our local footprint and avoid excess running costs.
This review has determined that our outpatient services in Richmond - allowing room for growth - only require three of our current five outpatient facilities.
Following this review, between now and 2027 we will be working together with our clinicians, patients, carers and partners to implement the following reconfigurations across our estate in Richmond.
Moving into The Richmond Royal Wellbeing Centre
This summer we open the newly refurbished outpatient centre for Richmond Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. This service relocated to Livingston House from Barnes in 2023 and is now due to relocate to this brand-new facility in August 2025. There will be no interruption in services and our teams will be working to ensure all patients, carers, families and stakeholders are aware and supported through this transition.
Moving out of Queen Mary’s Roehampton
This autumn we will also take another step in our ongoing process of vacating Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton (QMH). A number of our inpatient and community services have completed moves away from QMH over the past three years and this will be progressed further towards the end of the year.
By the end of October 2025 our two remaining services there, Putney and Roehampton Integrated Recovery Hub (IRH) and Richmond Home Treatment Team, will move to be based at Springfield Hospital in Tooting and Livingston House respectively. Clinic and consulting space will be retained at QMH, ensuring accessibility for patients in this part of the borough, until summer 2027 when Richmond Home Treatment Team will move to the reopened Barnes Hospital.
Retaining Livingston House in Teddington
Our Livingston House facility will be retained and the following Adult Community teams will continue to be based there ongoing: Richmond Integrated Recovery Hub, Richmond Personality Disorder Intensive Treatment Team and Richmond Older Adult’s Services (Memory Services, Care Home Liaison Service, Older People’s Intensive Community Support Team and the Older People’s Recovery Support Team).
Our Research and Development team, Richmond Home Treatment Team and Richmond Adult ADHD Services will also be based at Livingston House until summer 2027 when they will relocate to Barnes Hospital.
When our new outpatient facility at Barnes reopens in summer 2027, a number of our community services will continue to provide care flexibly across both Livingston House and Barnes Hospital. This will include Richmond Older Adult’s Services and Richmond Integrated Recovery Hub, supporting continued access for patients in both parts of the borough.
Moving out of the Maddison Centre
In summer 2027 all services currently provided from the Maddison Centre in Teddington, Twickenham Integrated Recovery Hub, Richmond Single Point of Access, and Richmond Early Intervention Service, will move from the Maddison to Livingston House, also in Teddington, and these services will be provided from Livingston House moving forwards.
Following this transition, the Maddison Centre will close and will be sold as surplus, supporting funding for the wider Better Environments Programme. The Maddison Centre and Livingston House are less than half a mile apart meaning access will be maintained for patients, carers and staff in this part of the borough.
Our next steps
Whilst these developments do not change the level of service provision across our community services, they represent some significant and positive changes in the make-up of our estate.
As these developments are progressed over the coming years, we will be continuing to work closely with patients, carers, staff and partners to support service transitions and ensure clear communication and engagement with all involved. Thank you to all who have supported our engagement so far — we look forward to progressing this exciting programme together.
